This open civic-learning file examines how insurance costs, liability and litigation risk, regulation, corporate employment structures, bargaining power, noncompetes, scheduling control, surveillance, mandatory arbitration, labor-market concentration, subsidies and other systems can affect what people pay, whether small businesses and volunteers are willing to try something new, and how much practical freedom workers have. It does not begin with a conclusion. Each topic should be tested against public records, data, law, contracts, filings, historical comparisons and competing explanations. For every issue, show what people commonly believe; what evidence supports that view; what complicates it; who benefits; who bears the cost or risk; what changed over time; what remains unknown; and what evidence would change the conclusion. Loaded descriptions such as “modern-day slave masters” are treated as questions about economic dependence, bargaining power and coercion to be tested, not as factual labels. The goal is to state facts in context, show the source, show what is unknown, follow what happens next, and let the reader decide.
